When an arm of the state systematically executes its citizens of color, it denies them their right to trial. Instead of a trial, unarmed young black men are sentenced to execution by the police, with a jury of one: Permit Patty.
Why aren't conservatives outraged?
This blatant abuse of power, in both calling the police on minorities engaging in perfectly normal behavior and excessive force in police response, should outrage conservatives and constitutionalists. Anyone summarily executed by the police is denied his rights. Murdered by the institutions of a country that was built to protect their rights.
Rather, the sentiment among the Republican Party is declared unconditional support for police officers and feigned ignorance on major racial disparities in the use of police force. As right-leaning political writer Sarah Quinlan said on Red State: "Conservatives frequently tout being defenders of the Bill of Rights. It’s important we don’t limit that to just the First and Second Amendments. The Sixth Amendment is a significant part of our criminal justice system and establishes the rights of the accused."
Despite the potential danger of calling the police on people of color, the underlying issue is in the casual racism of perceiving people of color as dangerous and their everyday activities as threatening.
While white (and white-passing) people may have been socialized to associate the police with help, mediation and assistance, that is not the reality for people of color, who associate the police with being summarily executed and unfairly targeted.
This predicament comes with a simple solution: minding your own business and allowing people of color to exist, without asking for a permit or an explanation for their behavior.
