Amid 'apocalyptic' Carr Fire, local newspaper, informs, Redding community

David Benda has been reporting for the Redding Record Searchlight in California for 28 years, covering so many fires he can reel off a number of them in an instant. The massive Fountain Fire in 1992. The Jones Fire just 10 miles outside Redding in 1999. The Klamathon Fire near the California-Oregon border just a few weeks ago. What he experienced last week, though, was different. “Fires are nothing new, but this one was so scary,’’ Benda said of the Carr Fire, which has burned nearly 100,000 acres and claimed six lives. “Thursday night is when it blew up, and I’ll never forget it. It was bad. … We started hearing sirens all around work. You looked outside and there was this glow, huge smoke. I know it’s a cliché, but it did look apocalyptic.’’ For Benda and his co-workers at the Record Searchlight, that meant it was time to get busy. With a staff of 11, plus ongoing assistance from other outlets in the USA TODAY Network, the newspaper has been keeping readers informed of the unpre

Judge, orders, minors, transferred, out of immigration, detention, facility

A federal judge on Monday ordered the Trump administration to transfer all undocumented immigrant minors out of a detention facility in Texas due to allegations of abuse and over-medication against the children. U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee ruled that conditions at the Shiloh Residential Treatment Center in Manvel, Texas, violate a 1997 court settlement that dictates how the government must care for minors who entered the country illegally on their own or were separated from their parents. Gee ruled that employees at the facility, which is contracted and overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services, administered psychotropic drugs to minors without their parents' consent, kept some minors in overly-restrictive confinement, and forbade minors from making private phone calls. The department says Shiloh, and other facilities like it, are "secure" facilities that are needed to detain minors with mental health problems or who pose other safety risks. Gee ruled

In a carefully crafted message on Thursday, PTI chief Imran Khan made a nuanced outreach to India while making clear that New Delhi’s response would hold the key.Imran Khan is poised to become the next Prime Minister of Pakistan and faces the task of cobbling up alliances to form a coalition government after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party fell short of majority mark. On Thursday, the former cricketer-turned politician declared his victory and dismissed the allegations of fraud calling it the most transparent election in Pakistan’s history. In a carefully crafted message, PTI chief made a nuanced outreach to India while making clear that New Delhi’s response would hold the key. Stressing that the blame game needs to stop between the two countries over Kashmir and Balochistan, 65-year-old Khan addressed his nation: “If India takes one step towards us, we will take two steps toward them…but at least (we) need a start. Right now, it is one-sided where India is constantly just blaming us.

'I cannot, condone, the misogyny, the racism': Oregon, Republican, becomes, Democrat, citing Trump

Image
A devout Republican commissioner in northwest Oregon says she can no longer stand by the party because of Trump's "racist tactics" and changed her political affiliation to become a Democrat. Lori Stegmann left a long explanation on her Facebook page on Wednesday for her sudden choice after spending her entire adult life as a conservative. She chronicled her love of conservative leaders over the years and her start in the U.S. as an orphan and immigrant from South Korea. Stegmann explained to her constituents in Multnomah County, which encompasses Portland, that she didn't want to leave the party but "it became impossible for me to stay." "I have not changed but the Republican party clearly has," Stegmann said in her message. "There’s too much at stake in our country right now and we have to speak out. As a woman, a business owner, a mother, an immigrant, and a minority I cannot condone the misogyny, the racism, and the unethical and immo

Raging, wildfire, threatens, Redding, Shasta, in Northern, California, kills at least 1 person

Image
REDDING, Calif. – A wildfire raging in Northern California exploded in size overnight and continued its swift march toward heavily populated areas Thursday, killing at least one person and consuming nearly 45 square miles by late afternoon, fire officials said. A bulldozer operator, who was hired privately, was killed in the blaze while at least three firefighters and an unknown number of civilians were injured with burns, said Cal Fire spokesman Scott McLean. The Carr Fire raged northeast and burned through Shasta and Keswick toward Redding and Shasta Dam. Officials issued evacuation orders to more than 2,200 residents west and north of Redding. McLean said the situation was chaotic as residents had little warning to flee the area. At least 15 structures were destroyed and five more damaged, according to Cal Fire. It was not immediately clear where they were located. California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection officials and Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said numerous

SAN FRANCISCO — It was better late than never for the Milwaukee Brewers' offense on Thursday night at AT&T Park. The Brewers scored twice in the eighth inning to take the lead and three times in the ninth to put the game away in beating the San Francisco Giants, 7-5. Christian Yelich had a big night, falling a triple short of the cycle while scoring three runs and driving in two more. Travis Shaw homered in the ninth as well as the Brewers snapped a six-game road losing streak in the opener of an eight-game West Coast swing. Reliever Josh Hader also made his first appearance in a road game since his controversial tweets from 2011 were unearthed. It was a moment that generated surprisingly little vitriol from the crowd of 40,643, which briefly booed his entrance in the sixth inning. “Like I said before, I can’t control what they’re going to say to me. I’ve made mistakes in my earlier years,” Hader said. “I’ve just got to go out and focus on what I’ve got to do and that’s to

An endangered orca whale died shortly after its birth on Tuesday, and the calf's mother has been tending to the body for three days. The calf was born near near Victoria, British Columbia, located about 75 miles northwest of Seattle. Researchers working to track Southern Resident killer whales responded to the scene, the Center for Whale Research said in a release. The organization observed the baby's corpse sinking and the mother repeatedly bringing it back to the surface on Tuesday. The mother supported her offspring's body on her forehead as she pushed it toward an island, the organization said. On Thursday, the mother – labeled J35 – entered her third day of mourning with her calf, Ken Balcomb, founder and principal investigator of the Center for Whale Research, told USA TODAY. "It's still happening," he said Thursday evening. He said that he has observed the behavior before, but not for this length of time. The organization says killer whales and d

SEOUL – A U.S. cargo plane carrying the remains of U.S. soldiers handed over by North Korea arrived at an American air force Base in South Korea on Friday morning, a step in fulfilling an agreement made between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un at their summit in Singapore last month. The plane, a U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster, transported the remains from Wonsan, North Korea to Osan Air Force Base, located some 40 miles south of Seoul. It was accompanied by service members from United Nations Command Korea and technical experts from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, the Hawaii-based government agency responsible for recovering missing personnel, according to a statement from the White House. Michael Cohen, says Trump, knew, approved, of meeting, with Russians, to get, dirt on Clinton: report

Image
Michael Cohen, the president's former longtime attorney and fixer, is claiming that Donald Trump knew and approved of a meeting at Trump Tower with a Russian lawyer — and he is willing to tell investigators about what he knows, according to multiple reports. Cohen alleges he was in the room with a number of others when Donald Trump Jr. informed then-candidate Trump of the planned meeting with a Russian lawyer promising dirt on Hillary Clinton, CNN and NBC News reported Thursday evening, both citing anonymous sources. Cohen claims Trump approved of the meeting moving forward, the news organizations reported, and is willing to tell Special Counsel Robert Mueller his version of the events. There is no recording of the alleged meeting, CNN and NBC reported. The 2016 meeting, just ahead of the presidential election, and what the president knew at the time has been up for debate since it was reported by the New York Times. The meeting was arranged through emails between a pub

Farmers ,need, USDA, help

Image
The Agriculture Department on Tuesday announced a $12 billion package to help farmers and ranchers deal with the consequences of a trade war not of our making. Given no other alternatives, it was the right thing to do. The situation we face is bad and getting worse. Major commodities such as corn and soybeans have plunged 20 percent since this trade war began in May. Farm income — already off by half compared with four years ago — has turned to real losses across farm country. Farming often means high stakes and low margins. Every year, farmers go to banks for loans. This covers everything from capital, such as new equipment, to annual production costs, such as seed and fertilizer. Banks expect those seasonal loans to be repaid right after harvest. Cash payments announced Tuesday will help many farmers avoid default or even foreclosure, so more of the people who feed us can continue doing so. The assistance package will buy us time while working to end the trade war. OUR VIEW: Farm

An Oregon high student who was disciplined by school officials for wearing a T-shirt in support of President Donald Trump's border wall settled his lawsuit against the school district for $25,000, his lawyers said Tuesday. Under the settlement, the Hillsboro School District, which serves a suburb west of Portland, must pay Addison Barnes $25,000 for attorney fees and Greg Timmons, the principal of Liberty High School, had to write Barnes an apology. "I brought this case to stand up for myself and other students who might be afraid to express their right-of-center views," Barnes said in a statement. Barnes was an 18-year-old senior on Jan. 19 when he wore the "Donald J. Trump Border Wall Construction Co." shirt to school ahead of a scheduled discussion on immigration issues in his "People and Politics" class, according to a complaint filed May 18 in U.S. District Court. Barnes was told his T-shirt, which also featured the words, "The wall j

Hundreds, of sea, turtles, washing, up dead, on Florida, beaches; red tide likely killer

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Hundreds of sea turtles have washed up on Southwest Florida beaches this year in a mass mortality event that researchers say will impact the recovery of the protected species. Seventeen have been recovered off Sanibel and Captiva islands near Fort Myers in the past week. "Our average for the entire year is usually around 30 or 35, but we’ve had 53 in June and July alone," said Kelly Sloan, a sea turtle researcher at the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation on Sanibel. Sloan said foundation has picked up 91 sea turtles on the islands since a red tide bloom started in October. "Most of them have been mature adults, and only one in 1,000 make it to adulthood," Sloan said. "It takes a loggerhead 25 to 30 years to mature, so that really does have a significant impact on their recovery." An 11-year-old girl caught an invasive fish with human-like teeth in an Oklahoma lake on Sunday. Kennedy Smith of Lindsay, Oklahoma, was fishing with her grandparents when she caught the fish — a pacu, which is native to South America and closely related to Piranhas. Pacu can grow to be up to 3.5 feet and 88 pounds, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation said in a social media post. Pacu primarily feed on plants but are considered omnivorous. The fish Smith caught weighed about 1 pound and bit her grandmother as she removed the hook from the fish's mouth. The woman, Sandra Whaley, said she suffered no ill effects from the bite. "The introduction of the non-native pacu into Oklahoma waters is most likely from individuals buying them as pets and releasing them when they outgrow the tank they were raised in," the Department of Wildlife Conservation wrote. The department said pacu have been caught in the state previously. Smith caught the fish at Fort Cobb L

Irked at the Uttar Pradesh government for filing a draft report of the vision document on protection of Taj Mahal, the Supreme Court Thursday asked: “Are we supposed to vet it?” The apex court also expressed surprise why the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which is responsible for the protection of Taj Mahal, was not consulted in framing draft vision document, reported news agency PTI. “Surprising that ASI, responsible for the protection of Taj Mahal, not consulted in framing draft vision document,” said the court. It directed both the governments to identify specific officers and authority in-charge to maintain the Taj Mahal and the redevelopment of the Taj Trapezium Zone. The UP government had on Wednesday presented a draft vision document for protection and preservation of Taj Mahal, proposing measures like the declaration of the precincts of the 17th-century monument a no-plastic zone and winding up of polluting industries in Taj Trapezium Zone. Apple, will use, Intel, modems ,only on, 2018, iPhones, confirms, Qualcomm

Image
Apple will be ditching Qualcomm’s modems and instead use only Intel modems in the 2018 iPhone series. Qualcomm’s Chief Financial Officer George Davis confirmed this in an earnings call, according to a report by CNET. This is not surprising given that Apple and Qualcomm are involved in a major legal battle in the United States and other parts of the world over patent infringement and unfair licensing terms. According to CNET, Davis was quoted as saying, “Apple intends to solely use our competitor’s modems rather than our modems in its next iPhone release.” Given that Intel is the only competitor, it is safe to presume that the 2018 iPhone series will feature only these. That Apple would ditch Qualcomm was something that analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had also predicted. Apple has been using both Qualcomm and Intel modems so far, though it is believe that the former’s modems are faster. Apple and Qualcomm are in the middle of a patent battle that is spread across the world. Qualcomm has gone

A small bomb was set off outside the US Embassy in Beijing on Thursday, Chinese police said. The bomber, a 26-year-old man, was injured, according to the police. "There was one individual who detonated a bomb. Other than the bomber, there were no injuries. The local police responded," an embassy spokesperson said in a statement carried by CNN. It came after reports of an explosion or fire outside the embassy, in the northeast of the Chinese capital. Earlier Thursday, state media reported that woman sprayed gasoline on herself in a suspected self-immolation attempt outside the embassy. Photos posted on Twitter showed a large amount of smoke and what appeared to be police vehicles surrounding the building. Global Times, the ruling Communist Party’s newspaper, said police detained the woman and took her away at around 11 a.m. local time. Facebook, just, shed, $130, billion, in two hours, Mark, Zuckerberg, lost $16.8 billion

Image
SAN FRANCISCO — Facebook lost about $130 billion in market value in just two hours, its steepest stock decline ever, after warning of slowing sales growth. The stock, which plunged as much as 24% in after-hours trading Wednesday, had a cascading effect on competitors Snap and Twitter, which dropped, too. Traders are bracing for a decline in tech stocks when the markets open Thursday. Chief financial officer David Wehner triggered the selloff when he said sales growth would continue to slow through the rest of the year. Shares, which had already declined 7 percent after hours, then fell as much as 24 percent after the comments on a conference call with analysts. The personal wealth of Facebook co-founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg took a major hit. He lost $16.8 billion in extended trading. If that loss holds through Thursday’s close, he will slip to sixth place from third in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. After-hours declines don't always hold the next day. But

More than 1,600 children separated from their parents at the border by the Trump administration are expected to be reunited by Thursday's court-ordered deadline, but now a battle is brewing over what should happen to them next. The ACLU says that government is preparing to quickly deport hundreds of families immediately after their reunification. In court briefs filed Wednesday, ACLU lawyers renewed arguments asking a federal judge to issue a stay blocking the government from deporting families for at least seven days. The ACLU argues parents who haven't seen their children in months need time to consult with lawyers to figure out their legal options, including whether they should fight their deportation, be deported together or accept deportation but leave their child behind with relatives in the U.S. to pursue asylum on their own.
